Its a Service Pack.. I'm using the home edition on a Dell and everything went off without a hitch. I don't see any difference in how my machine runs; just the laughable new options in Control Panel - why bother?
I already set Opera, etc. Messenger CAN be deleted anyway - it's jusst a three step process and it's gone for good. Norton's stuff is working as it always has and I haven't seen anything else affected either. The hotfixes are finally gone from the "remove programs" menu. All in all, a surprisingly smooth experience. I can't for the life of me figure out what happened to everyone else because I've never had a problem from day one with anything XP related other than minor incompatibility issues and SP1 continues the tradition.
